A GENTLE PLACE OF LEARNING

The timeless elegance of restored Herbert Baker buildings and the living vibrancy of expansive gardens, encompass a gentle place of learning for Bishop Bavin’s boarders and day scholars. It is a place of learning where the child is king and where the eternal virtues of integrity, love and endeavour, are carefully expounded.

The educational system in South Africa has been caught up in a vortex of change. At Bishop Bavin School we have focused our energies on successfully adapting to these changes and we are ready to meet the new challenges this millennium brings. In particular, the demands of the information and technological age are taken very seriously.

CHRIST CENTRIC ETHOS

“Christ above all” – our school motto ensures that all at Bishop Bavin strive to achieve distinction to please not just their fellow man, but God too. In the centre of the school stands the chapel, where weekly services take place for pupils and where we aim to deepen an awareness of the love of God and encourage spiritual growth. A Christo – centric ethos is strong at Bishop Bavin; it’s a spiritual ethos that permeates every aspect of school life.

In a family atmosphere of Christian care and concern, our school seeks to enhance the religious, moral, intellectual, physical and social developments of our students.

OUR TEACHING EMPHASIS

Our staff strive to take the children a step beyond the ordinary; a step beyond what is acceptable to excellence with integrity. Our unique Cluster Concept – where children are grouped age-appropriately in completely self-contained educational centres – ensures that pupils receive immediate and individual interaction with teachers and their peer group. The school buzzes with energy in each of the clusters as the new OBE programme is well implemented.

During our “Month of Excellence” in July – culminating in a massive display of pupil talents on Open Day – the school is transformed into a wonder-world of educational activities focused on a particular topical theme. The products of the month attested to the way Bishop Bavin is able to keep at the forefront of the educational world.

A caring, experienced and dedicated staff support and encourage academicexcellence, while at the same time, allow students to participate in open communication, decision making and problem solving. It is one of the primary goals of this school to nurture self-reliance, independent learning and the entrepreneurial spirit.

We pay special attention to delineating relevant learning outcomes that will develop children’s skills and potential. The school emphasizes leadership with conscience, achievement with responsibility, and individuality within society, thereby inculcating a strong sense of ‘self’ in pupils. This, we believe, will ensure that pupils who leave the school become confident and mature members of the society.

We also have no less than 100 computers serving 700 pupils from Nursery School to Matric – that’s 7 computer labs in all! We also boast, in this Maths and Science oriented school, an excellent Matric pass rate.

OUR FACILITIES

In this climate of strong moral and spiritual guidance, we are sensitive to allow children to pursue their interests and sporting ambitions. We offer sports such as rugby, basketball, cricket, netball, rowing, tennis, soccer, golf and swimming and develop their skills and talents. We also run a variety of cultural extra-mural activities and there is an active drama sphere at the school. Good use is made of indoor and open-air theatre for both junior and senior dramatic productions.

Aside from beautiful buildings, aesthetically pleasing gardens, well-equipped classroom, and five computer centres, our pride and joy is the Morgan Ellis Community Centre. This Centre includes a full-size indoor basketball court, magnificent stage, completely equipped gymnasium and an adjacent Olympic-sized heated swimming pool.

Excellent boarding facilities are also available for boys and girls with dedicated boarding matrons and staff who aim to make your child’s stay “a home away from home”.

OUR ACHIEVEMENTS

Our achievements attest to our success in creating an environment that brings out the best in children. We have been listed in the Sunday Times Top 100 and we have pupils representing the country as Junior Springboks in both basketball and rowing events. Pupils have been sent to sporting events as far a field as Cairo, Moscow, Florida and to Eton College, England! Our Prep School swimming team – that train in our Olympic sized swimming pool – have won every gala in which they have participated.

In all aspects, Bishop Bavin School is a credible voice sounding out its mission to set new standards and make a difference in South Africa. Parents and pupils stepping into Bishop Bavin truly take “a step beyond”.
