Pridwin Preparatory School is nestled in the suburb of Melrose, Johannesburg, in close proximity to the Central Business Districts of Rosebank and Sandton. Established in 1923, this small, Christian based family school is rooted in core values, such as independence, responsibility, respect, balance, empathy and leadership, which have endured since its inception.
ACADEMICS
Pridwin offers a balanced curriculum in an environment in which each boy will develop a lively, enquiring mind and a positive lifelong attitude towards learning in order to face future challenges and opportunities with confidence. Individual attention in small classes encourages each boy to reach his full academic potential.
The Junior School
The Junior School, which consists of grades 0 to 2, is geographically separate from the rest of the school. This enables younger boys to take their first steps in formal education with confidence. The primary focus of the curriculum is Numeracy, Literacy and Life Skills and the boys attend lessons with specialist teachers for other subjects such as Art, Physical Education, Zulu, Computers and Afrikaans. The Junior School also provides the service of an aftercare.
The Senior School
The Grade 3 and 4 Pridwin boys have the subjects of English, Maths and Social Science with a class teacher. From Grade 5, boys are exposed to specialist teachers. Maths and English classes are limited to 15 students at this level. Boys are also assigned a qualified member of staff who mentors and counsels boys in their care. All boys in the Senior School attend Art, Physical Education, Music, Design and Technology, Social Science, Library and Afrikaans lessons and a choice is available between Zulu or French as a third language.
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
Pridwin has 74 workstations shared between two computer labs and the media centre. The media centre also comprises an interactive smartboard and well stocked library, where boys are instilled with a love of reading and are encouraged to source information on their own. Each boy has his own email address and controlled internet access. Every boy from Grade 0 to Grade 7 attends formal computer lessons and the skills learnt are integrated into other subjects.
MUSIC AND DRAMA
Pridwin places special emphasis on music education and every boy is encouraged to explore a variety of musical instruments. The school boasts a Junior and Senior Choir, School Orchestra, Junior and Senior Jazz Bands and a Rock Band. The Senior Jazz Band and the first Cricket team traditionally participate in a biannual international tour. Every boy participates in Pridwin’s annual productions under the guidance of experienced and talented teachers. The annual Drama Hour and Speech Festival enable the boys to express themselves in front of an audience. Pridwin also hosts external performers to increase the boy’s exposure to drama and music.
SPORT
Each boy actively participates in and learns the skills for all the sports offered by the school. This includes athletics, cricket, cross country, football, hockey, rugby, swimming and tennis. Pridwin has excellent sporting facilities and qualified and experienced coaching staff. As a result of the full coaching and music programme, Pridwin has an extended school day.
