Herschel Girls School
learning to make a difference
Herschel provides excellence in education through enlightened and innovative teaching. It instils confidence and independence in its pupils and equips them to enter the wider community with the ability to think, listen, care and achieve.
Herschel’s traditional priority is academic excellence. Enlightened teaching methods encourage critical thinking and the confidence and ability to work independently. The wide range of subjects and related academic activities allow the girls scope to develop their skills and talents in many different directions and in addition, more than 85% of the girls voluntarily participate in the extensive sports programme.
The annual Enrichment Week takes teaching and learning beyond the classroom and into the community. It is designed to challenge our pupils to gain a deeper awareness of the world as well as to inculcate collaborative learning and the development of higher thinking skills - incorporating analysis, synthesis and evaluation.
The curriculum includes community service that promotes constructive and sensitive involvement in the broader society and we offer a wide range of clubs, societies and cultural activities.
Spiritual, moral and ethical issues are accorded an important place in the all-round education of the Herschel girl. We are an Anglican School but warmly welcome pupils of all religious denominations.
The Boarding House offers weekly boarding facilities for 30 boarders and is an integral part of school life. Boarders are able to participate in a wide variety of school activities (sporting and cultural); and bring energy, fun and a strong sense of family into the system.
Herschel continues to set the pace academically, culturally and in sport, turning out confident, capable young women in the best tradition of its 83-year history as one of South Africa ’s leading independent girls’ schools. Our singular strength lies in that we are a community, gathered together to follow the true path which leads out of the wisdom of the past towards the high challenge of tomorrow.
