St Andrew’s College – a premium boarding school

Founded in 1855 and one of the oldest schools in South Africa, St Andrew’s College in Grahamstown is an innovative school that embraces new frontiers. Its character, ethos and reputation have been built, earned and refined for over a century and a half.

This Anglican premium senior  school is a boarding school of choice and caters for 400 pupils from across the globe.

From grade 8 to Post Matric pupils experience individual attention with a focus on fostering individual talent.  The school motto is Nec Aspera Terrent (Difficulties do not dismay us) - this ideal of fearless acceptance of challenge sums up what the school aims to instil in its pupils as preparation for future life.

A wide choice of academic subjects, sports and extra-mural activities are on offer and the school rewards participation and effort. The school is passionate about ensuring that each boy is schooled for life, develops character and strives to reach their full potential.

A wide range of summer and winter sports to cater for all ability levels and interest groups are on offer. With excellent coaching and facilities, boys are encouraged to develop their sporting prowess, and also to enjoy and appreciate the sportsmanship, camaraderie and co-operation resulting from participation in team sports. The school encourages an appreciation of the arts and music, and pupils are expected to engage in cultural activities each week.

In Grade 10 classes are combined with neighbouring sister school the Diocesan School for Girls (DSG) which gives pupils the co-educational experience and optimises both schools’ resources and strengths. This attribute can be described as the ‘best of both worlds’ and promotes healthy and natural interaction between boys and girls.

Old Andreans often refer to the spirit of the school and the sense of belonging that is generated during school days. This emotional link resides in what can be described as an intimate, unpretentious and deeply historic school.
