John Wesley School is an independent, co-educational, Christian school and is a ministry of the Pinetown Methodist Church. It is situated in the heart of Pinetown on the historic Pineholme property which originally belonged to Mr Beviss, one of the original residents of Pinetown.
In 1977, a Pre-Primary program for 10 children was started in the Pinetown Methodist minister of the time, Ray Light’s, garage. They moved into specially built premises at the church in 1979 and the number of children attending quickly grew to seventy-five.
John Wesley School rapidly outgrew these facilities and in 1990 was granted permission by the South African government to take over a derelict, fire-damaged building on a 10 acre property with large park-like grounds not far from the Pinetown Methodist Church. Following the renovation of this building by members of the Church and Parents, Anglo American and De Beers Chairman’s Fund donated funds for the construction of classrooms, a Hall and Media Centre and subsequently for a Hostel.
There is a Pre-primary, Junior-Primary and Senior Primary with pupils from Grade 000 to Grade 7. There are approximately 450 pupils, including 45 pupils in the Hostel Facility. The John Wesley School Educational Trust feeds the school with bursaries for disadvantaged learners who cannot pay the school fees.
There are completely separate on-site facilities for the Pre-Primary which starts at 7.40am and finishes at 12.30pm. The Aftercare facility, available until 5.30pm, also includes a supervised homework club.
The school employs a Remedial Specialist who assesses each child for correct class placement and facilitates a remedial programme for children with learning difficulties. Some of these difficulties may be language related due to the fact that most learners’ mother tongue is an African language such as isiZulu, whereas the school’s medium of instruction is English.
To accommodate children who cannot cope with mainstream education, a much needed Special Education Facility was started at the beginning of 2006. There are now two classes accommodating both Junior and Senior Primary learners.
The school hostel provides a safe home from home for learners who live far from the school or whose parents work away from home and are concerned for their well-being. Hostel life is integrated into the development of life skills as children learn to cook, clean and care for themselves. They work in teams to prepare meals and to do chores and are able to participate fully in the extra mural activities and Sunday School programme. Loving Christian staff, headed by the Hostel Matron, create a secure family environment for the children.
There is an extensive sport/extra-mural programme – netball, hockey, cricket, soccer, swimming, athletics, cross-country, speech & drama, chess, computers, choir, art &craft, Maths Club and English Club, as well as mini-cricket and mini-soccer for the Junior Primary children.
At John Wesley School our aim is to ensure a happy, caring environment where children are encouraged to reach their full potential and teachers are committed to finding exciting and innovative ways to teach and extend them.
