New Hanover Prep is located on a 14 hectare campus, 35 km from Pietermaritzburg along a scenic Midlands drive. Daily transport routes are offered to and from Pietermaritzburg and surrounding areas.
New Hanover Prep is the sixth oldest independent school in South Africa – offering co-educational excellence since 1858. We hold on to the values of Christian faith, a sense of self, integrity and a sense of belonging. New Hanover Prep inspires children to maximize their unique potential in a Christian environment. Dynamic facilitators develop essential foundational skills thus enabling our children to face the challenges of the future. New Hanover Prep … fostering self-growth in the formative years.
ACADEMIC
New Hanover Prep is an English medium school offering German, Zulu and Afrikaans as additional languages. New Hanover Prep employs the National Curriculum Statement in its high standard of academic excellence while adapting to current trends in education.
As part of our strong Christian heritage, Bible-based teaching is offered by local Pastors and teachers alike. Our Entrepreneurship programme culminates in our annual Market Day where children are given opportunities to develop important life skills and business acumen.
SPORT
New Hanover Prep offers children the opportunity to explore various sporting codes and activities. The importance of physical activity as part of every child’s development is emphasized in the wide-ranging activities on offer. Apart from cricket, basketball, swimming, soccer, rugby, hockey, netball, athletics and tennis, children are given the chance to play traditional games such as hop scotch and marbles.
While mass participation is central to the sports offered, talented athletes are exposed to higher levels of competition through district and regional participation and representation.
CULTURAL
Cultural activities are an integral part of the classroom environment. The curriculum is enriched through activities that develop the imagination and inspire creative minds. Active participation in a variety of cultural programmes, including educational productions, mimes, role-plays, assemblies and puppet shows encourage growth in confidence.
CAMPUS
Set on 14 hectares of country farmlands, New Hanover Prep overlooks the pristine hills of the KZN Midlands. The church, which has been proclaimed a national monument, is situated at the end of the lane of plain trees. Across the wide open, safe spaces lie the sports fields which include a flood-lit field used extensively for day-night sports events. The swimming pool and tennis courts add to the picture that is New Hanover Prep.
Below the admin block grows the Indian Mahogany tree where our resident pair of Spotted Eagle Owls nest each year. The importance of our New Hanover Owls is such that the owl has been adopted as the New Hanover Prep mascot.
An affordable independent school education is made possible by the support of the farm situated nearby, the proceeds of which subsidise every child’s fees.
FACILITIES
New Hanover Prep’s Media Center comprises an automated library, Audio-Visual room and Teacher Resource Center. These facilities are complimented by a fully networked computer system throughout, including an airconditioned Computer Center where big screen projection is used to teach I.T skills. Children can access the internet using high speed broadband and all staff and grade 6 and 7 children communicate using their own email addresses.
BOARDING HOME
New Hanover Prep’s boarding establishment provides a warm, friendly environment where each child can feel at home as part of the family. The heart of the boarding home establishes a secure environment where the children feel comfortable and supported. Boarders can enjoy three healthy, home-cooked meals a day and a huge secure playing area. The boarding establishment provides weekly boarding and laundry services. Resident house parents provide a structured yet caring home where children can enjoy their “school family”.
COMMUNITY
The openness and warmth of the community rounds off an amazing educational experience for our children, with parents, family and friends of New Hanover Prep all being an important part of what is “more than just a school.”
