School Type: Girls

Micklefield is a small, independent, girls' primary school in Rondebosch, Cape Town. There is one class per grade with a maximum of 25 girls per class from Pre-Primary to Grade 7.

Micklefield was started in July of 1928 by two ladies, Miss Jill Wilson (later Mrs Ingram) and Miss Tish Beazley. The school was then in the grounds of Miss Wilson’s parents house: Grange Cottage in Gables Road, Rondebosch. Thus the school was known as Grange Cottage School. Micklefield moved to Micklefield Cottage at 81 Sandown Road, Rondebosch in 1934.

OUR ETHOS

Micklefield believes in providing a broad-based education, emphasising excellence in a caring environment, and in particular is committed to:

  • instilling a love of learning
  • encouraging the development of academic excellence
  • developing creative thinking and effective communicating skills
  • optimizing pupil-teacher contact in small, intimate classes
  • enabling full participation in cultural and sporting activities
  • realising full individual potential and building self-esteem
  • encouraging empathy and consideration for others
  • inculcating personal responsibility and self discipline
  • maintaining a happy communicative environment with a dedicated and accessible staff and parent representation

DRAMA

All girls at Micklefield enjoy drama classes as part of the curriculum. Activities include miming, dancing classes and improvisation as well as debating. Classes are stimulating and often boisterous. However, the girls learn much about other cultures and traditions whilst having fun. Costume design and making is part of drama too.

MUSIC

Micklefield offers tuition in a wide range of musical instruments. More than half the girls at Micklefield play a musical instrument and we enjoy it very much. Music staff members are well educated in the music field, and Micklefield has an orchestra and two choirs. Many piano pupils do the Royal School examinations and have achieved high results.

SPORT

Micklefield offers a wide range of sports and everyone participates in gym classes.
During winter the girls play netball and hockey, and to keep fit they run cross-country. In summer they play tennis, volleyball and rounders (similar to softball). Micklefield takes parts in a 'Mini Olympics' every four years, held to coincide with the Olympic Games.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

One of the important elements of computer lessons at Micklefield is getting the girls involved in international projects via the Internet. In addition to increasing their computer skills, it makes us part of the global community and increases the girls' awareness of the world around them and helps them interact with children from many other countries.
