St Benedict's College

School Type: Boys

St. Benedict's in Bedfordview, Gauteng, is one of South Africa's largest and most successful Catholic Boys’ Schools. It operates as three schools under one umbrella and currently caters for 540 College, 360 Prep School and 400 Elementary School boys.

It is in every sense a Catholic School where Christian formation is seen as its fundamental purpose. The College places particular focus on the spiritual development of boys, with emphasis on the inculcation of moral and social values. Boys invariably respond by demonstrating self-discipline, integrity and concern for others as emerging character traits.

It is a school with a proud academic tradition producing consistently outstanding results in the IEB matriculation examinations. The College has a reputation as one of the country’s top schools in mathematics, with the majority of boys entering university choosing to study Engineering and the Hard Sciences.

There has been no failure at the matric level for the last thirty years. University Entrance pass rates are invariably in excess of 90%.

Sport has increased in importance - and in success - in recent years, largely as a result of St.Benedict's unique "integrated day", where much of the boys' sport takes place during school hours. The same rigorous approach to sport is dopted as in academics - with coaching and sporting facilities that rank amongst the best.

Because we believe that sporting opportunity is for all – and not just the “stars” – a wide choice of activities is offered: athletics, basketball, cricket, rowing, swimming, tennis and waterpolo in summer and rugby and hockey in winter. Participation is compulsory for all boys.

Various Clubs and Societies enjoy support in all the grades. Activities include chess, drama, debating, public-speaking, the pipe band and scouting. Pupils’ cross-cultural perspectives are enriched through organised tours of countries around the world, with excursions in recent years to China, Russia, Vietnam, Egypt, India and Nepal.

A number of academic and sporting scholarships are offered each year to boys entering Grade 8. Boarding facilities will be available from the beginning of the 2006 academic year.
