School Type: Boys

Clifton was established in 1924 by Mr Harry Stubbs, an ex-headmaster of Durban Preparatory High School. As many Clifton parents were concerned during war time about the danger to Durban, an estate at Nottingham Road was bought in 1942, to which almost half the boys moved. The Durban school continued in its existing location.

The subsequent incremental development of the school buildings through the acquisition of residential properties has ensured the enduring "Family" feeling that pervades Clifton School and will continue to do so.

GRADE R

Facilities for our youngest learners are superb. Our Grade R unit boasts the most modern, airconditioned classrooms, a gracious foyer and exhibition area, a music room, a spacious, airy workroom for woodwork and box construction, an exceptionally large creative area and a kitchen to cater for baking lessons and the many and varied functions planned throughout the year.

Classrooms are equipped with computers and the most up-to-date educational games, puzzles and construction toys. Outside, the Reception Unit has its own sparkling swimming pool and a large, fully equipped garden where children can play and grow in harmony with their needs.

Top quality education is given to our pupils by a team of hand-picked professionals who know how to bring out the best in their charges. We teach according to individual strengths and working with these in a warm, loving environment, we help children to become confident, curious, creative individuals, ready to take on the world!

JUNIOR PREPARATORY

The journey from our Grade R classrooms to our Junior Preparatory School is seamless. Our experienced teachers are committed to child centred education and they ensure that the boys' introduction to formal learning is one that is adventurous, inspiring and fun.

We believe that happy children learn best and our classrooms are caring, nurturing and exciting places where a spirit of enquiry and a commitment to excellence prevail. Our small classes allow each boy to soar and teachers are able to focus on the needs of every individual in their classrooms. We expect the best from every boy and we provide the environment in which that is possible.

It is at this level that grounding is given in the academic and social skills that are needed to develop a lifelong love of learning. We offer a curriculum that is broad, exciting and innovative and goes well beyond the requirements of the national curriculum. We adopt a holistic approach and give a distinct focus to each of the academic, social, cultural, sporting and spiritual sides of a boy's development.

SENIOR PREPARATORY

Our commitment to active learning and the development of the skills that facilitate a process driven curriculum is in clear evidence in the Senior Preparatory School. Here we empower our boys to use knowledge in a variety of contexts, we encourage them to make connections between school and the wider society and we ensure that they develop as confident, fulfilled and excited participants in the learning process.

Although Clifton follows the national curriculum, we are able to go far beyond these parameters. We recognise that we are living in a time of rapid change and that new challenges will constantly be presented to our boys. In educating them for a changing world, we emphasize the need for the acquisition of self-study skills to equip them for lifelong learning.

COLLEGE

Clifton College is a young school, yet the speed with which we have achieved the development of this exciting initiative has indicated how enthusiastic parents and boys have been for the concept of an independent day school in Durban.

Attracting quality staff to run a wealth of activities for the boys, the programmes of the school grow daily. We have concentrated on putting a top class academic structure in place alongside a full sporting programme and a comprehensive set of cultural opportunities. With our unique campus growing all the time as we refurbish beautiful old Durban houses to house each block of classes, and sporting facilities secured across Durban, the excitement is tangible.
