HISTORY

St Teresa's Mercy School, formerly known as St Teresa's Convent and Rosebank Mercy Convent, opened on 28 January, 1930, in a small garage in Sturdee Avenue, Rosebank, Johannesburg, where three Mercy Sisters taught three junior and two high school pupils.

The 1960s saw St Teresa's grow into separate junior and senior blocks with double classes throughout the school. Over the years a happy spirit has prevailed. The school has been blessed with dedicated principals, caring and willing teachers and a supportive parent body.

AIMS

At our school we provide a holistic, Christian education in a loving, secure and structured family environment. We encourage each child to develop her talents, focusing on individual attainment rather than competitiveness with others. At the same time, we promote respect for self, others and the environment. Personal responsibility is encouraged.

Our school aims to provide the environment and facilities for the spiritual, intellectual, emotional, creative and physical development of all of our pupils. We strive to enable the pupils to value their own uniqueness in order to develop a healthy self-image. We encourage the ability to adapt to a rapidly changing world and to live at peace within it. We support and supplement the efforts of the parents in challenging each girl to achieve the best of which she is capable.

INTERMEDIATE PHASE

St Teresa's Mercy School provides a warm and nurturing environment which arises from our shared conviction with Catherine McAuley – foundress of all Mercy Education – that mercy was the way Christ related to all people. This intrinsic value of mercy informs the distinctive qualities of St Teresa's educational ethos, namely compassion, respect, justice, generosity and operational excellence.

These attributes and values are endorsed in the school's vision statement and establish the boundaries within which the St Teresa's family is united and within which the St Teresa's family thrives.

We invite you to visit our school where you can experience the loving, Christian environment, interact with our staff and students to observe the Mercy policy in action, in the atmosphere of our vibrant classrooms and tranquil gardens.
