School Type: Co-Educational

Founded in 1998 with an initial intake of 68 pupils, Stanford Lake College has grown from humble beginnings into an academic Beacon of Excellence in the Limpopo Province, unique, unconventional yet traditional. The school now has 258 pupils of whom 195 are boarders from nearby towns and the surrounding agricultural communities, as well as neighboring countries such as Botswana and Zimbabwe.

The school has focused on the unique environment of lake, forest and mountain in both the curricular and extra mural programmes. The dad (dream and do) programme uses adventure activities such as kayaking, rafting, rock climbing and rope courses to develop problem-solving skills, which are then applied in the technology classes. Whole year groups are taken camping and hiking in the mountains at various times of the year while river rafting has proved to be increasingly popular.

As a new school in post apartheid South Africa, Stanford Lake College has pupils from different cultures, religions, races and languages. The school follows the Christian calendar and festivals while acknowledging the needs of the Hindu and Muslim pupils. As a small new school Stanford Lake College has the chance to promote mutual understanding and friendship in a country environment in the best interests of nation building and transformation in South Africa.

Stanford Lake College started as a community effort and is managed by a Board of Directors who set policy and act as the custodians of the ethos of the College. The school executive is responsible to ensure that the primary function of the College is carried out efficiently.

The aim at Stanford Lake College is to prepare pupils to live and work in South Africa and the global village. Being a small school with two classes in each level, we are able to meet the needs of pupils through meaningful interaction both in and out of the classroom.

Pupils are encouraged to explore, to analyze, to internalize, and to present information in both written and verbal forms in teams and as individuals. Information technology facilities are used at all levels and in all parts of the curriculum to enhance and enrich the learning process. Comprehensive systems of self-assessment, gradings and reporting ensure that the pupils are carefully monitored and supported in their studies.

The Stanford Lake Centre for Outdoor Development Training is ideally situated on the Stanford Lake College campus. The centre is in close proximity to three lakes, the Ebenezer dam, and mountains for hiking, orienteering, climbing and kloofing.

The Centre is self-supporting and the on-site trainers are qualified to run courses and workshops for independent bodies such as primary and secondary schools, corporate groups, church communities, leadership camps or youth groups.
