Mission an Value Statement
In an environment of courage and integrity, hard work and responsibility we aim to produce leading international jockeys of excellence who are academically well rounded and equipped with the skills for life.
The South African Jockey Academy (SAJA), which forms part of the Summerveld Training Centre situated in KwaZulu Natal, has been providing education and training to apprentice jockeys since 1958.
Since 1972 every South African champion jockey has been a graduate of SAJA, beginning with Michael Roberts. It is testimony to the calibre of training at the Academy that jockeys produced here now compete with great success at most racing jurisdictions throughout the world.
Other outstanding champion jockeys trained at our Academy include Basil Marcus, Douglas Whyte, Mark Khan, Felix Coetzee, Jeffrey Lloyd, Robbie Fradd, Anthony Delpech to name but a few. During the past 51 years of our existence the Academy has produced a total of 41 international championship jockeys in the UK, Hong Kong, Singapore, Macau and Mauritius.
The Academy, which also has branches in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth employs professional riding masters and highly qualified educators. The apprentices also receive extensive work and race riding experience at the following major training centres – Clairwood, Summerveld and Ashburton.
Over and above the practical riding training on offer, SAJA provides an educational curriculum (National Senior Certificate) for grade 10 – 12. Subjects include:

- Mathematical Literacy
- Life Science
- Business Studies
- Equine Studies
- Stable Management
