Theodor Herzl School is a co- educational Jewish Day School which offers a unique educational experience for all children, in the pre-primary, primary and secondary phases of schooling.
In January 1959, the first Sub A class was established. From these humble, though visionary beginnings, has grown a school that has built a solid academic record based on:
- The fostering of critical thinking skills in a relationship where the staff are not afraid to be questioned by learners.
- Promoting self-discipline – the ability to make god life choices.
- A multi-cultural environment that allows for exposure to a variety of cultures.
- A curriculum that keeps abreast with modern trends and provides in the needs of our learners.
- A learner – teacher ratio (20:1) in the high school that ensures that each learners’ needs are met.
- The appointment of well qualified, academic and professional staff who operate at the cutting edge of teaching developments.
The above has ensured that we have enjoyed an excellent record of academic achievement. We have had a 100% pass rate in Gr. 12 for the past 31 years and for the last five years; all but three candidates have obtained a Matriculation Exemption.
In 2000, Theodor Herzl was rated by the Sunday Times as the top academic school in South Africa. In 2004 we were one of only 18 schools that achieved the unique double – a 100% pass rate and a 100% rate of Matriculation Exemption, i.e. the whole class had access to tertiary study.
At present we write the National Senior Certificate, as offered by the National Department of Education. We are more than satisfied with the administration and standard set by the Department.
Learners are further enriched by:
- A sports program that is developed and monitored by a Director of Sport- enabling learners to select from a variety of sporting codes.
- A cultural program which exposes the pupils to a variety of life skills.
- Numerous outings, which ensure real life experience for the learner.
- ULPAN, Shabbatons where the Jewishness of the school is celebrated.
During our Matric year, we have a "Matric Program", during which our Grade 12’s are given the freedom of and are treated like students. During term 3 they are not required to wear a uniform, they can grow their hair and wear jewelry. They are required to attend 80% of their lessons and they may even leave the campus during the school day.
Of course, they are monitored and mentored throughout the program. We believe that this teaches them self-discipline to cope with the freedom of student life. They are very well positioned to make correct choices where study is concerned once they become students. They are, in fact well prepared to cope with the rigors of tertiary study.
Finally, our Students’ Co-ordinating Committee has replaced the traditional Prefect System. Members of the SCC are in charge of different Forums, each with a specific focus – Sport, Culture, Judaica and Interact. They attend a two-day leadership development workshop and are given ample opportunity to develop their leadership skills throughout the year.
We look forward to sharing our very happy school with you!
