HISTORY AND DESCRIPTION

Treverton was established in 1964 as a Boys’ Preparatory School. It now offers 16 years of consecutive co-education from Pre-Primary to Post Matric for boarders and day scholars. It is situated on a 270 ha estate in Mooi River, KwaZulu-Natal.

ETHOS

As a co-educational school, Treverton provides a healthy environment and family atmosphere where Christian morals and values play an integral role in the everyday living experience. Pastoral care is provided by a Chaplain, Counsellor and House Parents.

MATRIC RESULTS

The College has had a 100% pass rate for 10 years. In 2007, the 59 candidates achieved 11 A and 20 B aggregates and a university exemption rate of 90%.

CURRICULUM

Preparatory School

Incorporates a Pre-Primary section. Education has a holistic approach, is in step with the new OBE syllabus, and has a strong skills based bias, reinforced by relevant field trips.

College

Grade 8-12 learners are prepared to write the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) National Senior Certificate Examination. The curriculum approach is to develop the whole person through academic excellence, participation in sport and cultural activities, plus a formalised outdoor programme developing responsibility and leadership.

Post Matric

A unique, relevant course bridging the year between school and adult life with a number of life-skills based courses offering qualifications.  This programme includes a wide spectrum of experiences (adventure activities, learning for life components and preparation for career entry) that allows students to mature, develop and learn essential skills.

The course is supervised, action-packed, relevant and disciplined; it combines learning, fun, autonomy and guidance in a Christian environment, and lays the foundations for establishing deep and solid friendships.

Students are housed in separate male and female cottages in a complex with a communal resource centre.

COMPUTER & INTERNET FACILITIES

From Grade R, learners acquire computer skills. There are four well-equipped computer laboratories. Prep provides information retrieval and graphic design skills. The College encourages research, developing computer skills and obtaining internationally recognised ICDL qualification. From Grade 4, all learners have email and controlled access to the Internet.

BOARDING FACILITIES

The Prep girls’ hostel provides two-bedroom cubicles, while consolidated boys’ hostels allow interaction and peer bonding. Weekend activities are well organised.

The College has three boys’ hostels and two for girls. Common rooms with satellite TV provide educational and recreational entertainment. Each girl has a separate cubicle. In the boys’ hostels, two boys share a section until Grade 12, when each boy has his own cubicle.

Both schools have fully equipped sickbays staffed by qualified nursing sisters.

SPORT

Traditional sport is augmented by horse riding, adventure racing and rockclimbing. Twelve percent of learners represent provincial teams and there were four national representatives in 2007. Amenities include an astro-turf hockey field and heated swimming pool. Both schools have full-time Sports Coordinators. A fully equipped Equestrian Centre, with qualified instructors boasts dressage and show-jumping arenas and cross-country courses. There are even two dams stocked for fishing.

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

Treverton is a pioneer in environmental education with its own Wildlife Area, supporting seven different eco-systems. It is home to indigenous antelope and small mammals, and blesbok, hartebeest and zebra have been reintroduced. Learners use it for applied studies in a number of disciplines.
