Cordwalles is an Anglican Independent Boys’ Preparatory School, which strives to provide a balanced, holistic education in a caring environment. Through the provision of quality teaching and learning resources and the exposure to varied activities, each boy is encouraged to develop Personal Excellence, respect and empathy for others and a belief in himself.

Cordwalles Preparatory School was founded by Bishop Samuel Baines in 1912 as a direct result of Michaelhouse moving from Pietermaritzburg to Balgowan and needing a preparatory school of its own to ensure its future enrolment.

Initially Cordwalles consisted of five acres of land, a house and twelve boys. By 1917 the school encompassed nineteen acres of land, classrooms and dormitories. In the 1930's the Chapel, Gymnasium, Swimming Pool as well as additional classrooms, dormitories and land were added.

Today the school consists of fifteen hectares of ground, a newly constructed 'Inky' block and a 'state of the art' Lecture Room, Theatre, Science Laboratory, Design & Technology Centre and Computer and Media Centres. The School enrolment has grown to more than two hundred and fifty boys, over fifty Academic and Support Staff and prepares boys for admission to all major Senior Schools in the country.

Personal excellence and the development of all boys have always been a priority at Cordwalles. Boys are extended and allowed to exert their individualism throughout their School careers from Grade R to Grade 7. Guided by experienced, enthusiastic teachers and support staff, our boys are encouraged to be confident, independent and creative problem solvers.
