The opportunity to educate a child in one school, from Grade 00 to Grade 12, is a vision to which many parents and educationalists aspire. Marist Brothers Linmeyer (Marian College) offers an excellent education, fine facilities, devoted staff and a Christian environment, making "one school" education possible.
Marist Brothers Linmeyer (Marian College) has its roots in the Marist tradition of the Catholic Church. Founded by St Marcellin Champagnat in 1817, the Marist Brother's Schools are internationally recognised as part of a vibrant global education system providing well-rounded, complete education to their students, ensuring that they are quipped for the demands of the new millennium.
In 1889, the Marist Brothers established the fist boys' school in Johannesburg in Koch Street. This school was moved to its present site in 1966. The altar in the school chapel is the one that was used at the Koch Street School, emphasising the pride with which Marist Brothers Linmeyer acknowledges its humble beginnings.
In a family atmosphere of Christian love and care, Marist Brothers Linmeyer seeks to enhance the religious, intellectual, physical and social development of each pupil. Special emphasis is placed on solid moral standards, together with self-discipline, justice and service to the community.
The challenges of an expanding curriculum have been enthusiastically implemented to meet the educational demands of the future. Dynamic educational interaction, focussing on life skills and personal enrichment, ensures that we provide an integrated education for our children during their formative years.
A well-balanced programme exists to meet the needs of each individual. In the Primary School each grade consists of three classes, and the High School 4 classes, these classes are organised to cater for individual attention while maintaining a healthy spirit of competition. These relatively small classes are taught by a dedicated team of professional educators who strive to achieve the "personal best" for each of the students in their care. Field trips and outings are regularly undertaken to ensure our goal of a relevant, holistic educational experience.
Final examinations are written through the Independent Examination Board, ensuring the maintenance of a world-class internationally recognised education. Academic excellence, combined with personal integrity and determination, ensures that each Maristonian enters the broader community equipped to meet the challenges of our modern lifestyle. Proof of this is evidenced in the numerous achievements of our past students, which include the presentation, on several occasions, of the South African Marist Award - the highest accolade that can be conferred on a Marist student in South Africa.
Students at Marist Brothers Linmeyer are given the opportunity to participate in numerous sporting activities and are coached by qualified instructors or professional coaches. Tennis and basketball courts, as well as an eight-lane, 25m swimming pool are other outdoor facilities provided. Many sports are offered at inter-school level, with students representing their province each year.
Involvement in extra-mural activities is encouraged to further foster the ideals of teamwork and support that are a part of our Marist tradition. Emphasis is placed on involvement and personal accomplishment, within the broader intention of inter-school competitiveness. Numerous cultural societies exist to cater to the needs of students whose interests extend beyond the playing fields. These include such diverse activities as public speaking, debating, chess, music and pottery.
If you wish to educate young people,
first you must love them,
And you must love them all equally.
