School Type: Co-Educational

Grayston Preparatory School enters its thirteenth year as an independent school, having grown from the old Sandown Primary School.  The school’s superb aftercare and holiday care facilities cater not only for local residents, but also for those parents who work in, or close to, the Sandton CBD.

The outstanding resources facilitate the provision of comprehensive academic, cultural and co-curricular programs.  The holistic educational approach caters for the development of all children.  Parental communication and involvement is strongly encouraged.  Grayston focuses on what is important in education –children.

An exciting initiative has been the 'Care Bear' program, introduced to encourage inter-action between our Grade 7's (13 and 14 year olds) and our Pre-preparatory's (5 and 6 year olds).

Every Grade 7 child is allocated 2 or 3 bear cubs for the year.  Besides their once a month visit to the Pre-Prep to be with their 'cubs', the 'Care Bears' are regularly seen visiting or playing with their little charges, of their own accord.

Loving, caring friendships have developed and the cubs really enjoy having someone bigger to help, guide and care for them.  Both age groups have gained incredibly from this liaison and Holding the Hand that Holds the Future has become a reality.

Curriculum

Grayston follows the principles of Outcomes Based Education, firmly believing in the benefits our learners derive from this cross-curricular, problem solving and co-operative approach. Pupils are observed on a continuous basis in order that consolidation, remediation and extension can occur.

Class teachers (Grades 000 to 5) and subject teachers (Grades 6 and 7), together with specialist teachers for the Physical Education, Music, Arts and Culture, Zulu and Information Technology learning areas, facilitate the learning experiences of the children.  Small classes (average 20, maximum 24), coupled with committed educators, ensure a productive learning environment.

Grayston’s technology facilities are superb.  They consist of a multi media laboratory of 29 workstations for multi-tasking, controlled internet access and e-mail facilities, and 2 other laboratories of 29 work-stations each for computer aided learning.  In addition each classroom is equipped with at least one workstation and printer.  Integration with the well resourced Media Centre is ongoing.

Homework

Each day Grades 1 to 7 pupils receive homework to allow them the opportunity to consolidate what they have learnt in class that day.  Parents are encouraged to interest themselves in their child’s learning process and the parent signs the child’s diary once the work has been completed satisfactorily.  Children who remain at school in the after school care program enjoy supervised study centres where homework is completed.
