Boarding Facilities (Being Renewed)

Edendale has been launched into an exciting new era! The school has been blessed with a new campus, as well as a 810 hectare farm which will enable us to address education at many different levels.

Edendale has recently had the good fortune of having been given the farm and a beautiful campus, which offers facilities such as twenty additional classrooms, two laboratories, two auditoriums, catering canteens and conference facilities.

HISTORY

Edendale has a rich history. It started as a Lutheran mission school in the early 1900s on the farm Edendale, which almost a century later became the campus of the Promat College of Education. In the 1960s it became a farm school under the DET. It was privatised under PEPPS in 1992 with the present head of school, Rina Prenzler, as principal and three teachers, of whom two are still serving on the staff.

In 1993 the school moved to its present campus right next to Promat, where a lovely campus was established with a swimming pool and sports fields. A high school was started in 2000, but soon the facilities became inadequate and the high school moved to Promat, from whom we rented accommodation. With the demise of Promat the entire property now belongs to Edendale and we have literally returned to our roots.

A NEW ERA

This latest development has ushered in a new era, starting with the establishment of the Makhulong Edu-Centre. Apart from the primary and high school sections, which will still be known as the Edendale Independent School, we will be able to introduce career orientated fields of study such as agriculture, hotel management and catering, communication as well as design and technology. These should open doors to the job market for our learners.

ACADEMIC STANDARDS AND SUPPORT

Edendale is justly proud of the excellent foundation our learners receive in the preparatory phase. High academic standards are maintained in the primary and high school by a team of enthusiastic and well qualified teachers. Every child is important to us and for this reason occupational, remedial and speech therapists are on hand to ensure that children with learning and behaviour problems are identified and enabled to receive intervention.

EXTRA MURAL ACTIVITIES AND SPORT

Outdoor and extra mural activities are very important at Edendale, especially since we are situated in a healthy country environment. For instance, when children go on “field studies” they are able to gather specimens and observe birds, insects and plants at close range.

Athletics, soccer, netball and volleyball are offered at a competitive level and weekend soccer and cross country activities take place on the campus and farm. Since last year learners have been able to take swimming lessons from outside instructors. Cricket will be introduced this year. Aerobics is offered at the high school. Sport clinics are planned for school holidays.

CULTURAL ACTIVITIES

Music, dancing and drama are part of the Edendale culture. The school has excelled at the Rentmeester Arts Festival over the past years and groups have performed at outside venues and on visits to the UK. The annual Speech Competition is also a highlight on the school calendar.

PARTNERSHIPS

For the past eight years the school has built a firm partnership with Comberton College in the UK. Students from Comberton, accompanied by two staff members, visit Edendale and high school learners are given the opportunity to pay return visits to Comberton. Lasting friendships and invaluable cultural understanding have developed between the two schools and our learners have been given a global vision which they otherwise would not have had.

Skidmore College in Saratoga, USA also runs an exchange programme with Edendale. Twenty education students and their lecturers visit us regularly and do reading and study programmes with our learners. In return staff members from Edendale have gone to Skidmore on professional enrichment courses annually.

Furthermore several new partners, such as Global Ministries, Lehae Latsepo and local universities have come on board to assist us in developing the school and the farm.

OUTREACH PROGRAMMES

Edendale also serves the wider community. At the high school’s Inter Act Club learners are involved in various projects and the primary school runs an outreach programme at the Tshapinda Primary School in Venda.
