School Type: Co-Educational

King David High School Linksfield was established in the early 1950’s primarily to serve the Jewish Community of the Johannesburg region. Since those early and tentative beginnings, the school now has a learner population of over 900.

Although not exclusively Jewish, the high school requires of all of its students to study Hebrew and Jewish Studies. The school’s gardens, nestling against the backdrop of the Linksfield Ridge, offer an attractive and aesthetically pleasing environment to students and teachers.

ETHOS

King David High School dedicates itself to the spiritual, moral and intellectual development of Jewish youth. Students are encouraged to explore their emotional and historical links with the Jewish people. This is achieved not only in the classroom but also through the commemoration of festivals and historical events, as well as activities which enhance the student’s understanding of his heritage, such as informal gatherings and studies overseas.

ACADEMIC

The school has, since its inception, pursued academic excellence. Our matric results have, over the years, rivalled the best in South Africa; in 2003, we achieved a total of 346 distinctions from 190 learners, an average of 1,8 distinctions per learner. 57 students emerged with “A” aggregates while 5 of our learners were placed in the Top 50 of the National IEB exam.

94% of the grade achieved university entrance. Our graduates have enjoyed huge success in tertiary institutions, both in South Africa and overseas. The size of the school enables us to offer the greatest possible variety in subjects.

EXTRA MURAL

King David endeavours to achieve a balance between academic, sporting and cultural activities. We offer most sports and excel in many, particularly in team sports such as rugby, soccer and netball, and individual sports such as tennis and squash.

In 2003 we had 21 Provincial Representatives and 9 South African Junior Representatives. Public speaking, debating, dramatic productions and video and camera training are significant elements of school life.

Our outreach programmes have been particularly extensive. Our teachers and students are involved in assisting learners from a major high school in Alexandra, while our Interact Club, Streetwise and Twilight groups do important work among the disadvantaged youth of Johannesburg.
