HISTORY AND LOCATION

Kyalami Preparatory School is a modern, dynamic, independent preparatory school for boys and girls. It is a community-orientated school situated on 3,5 hectares of land adjacent to Kyalami Estates.

ETHOS

The school has a multi-faith approach, which embraces all cultures and religions. This teaches the child empathy, tolerance and understanding of the diverse society in which we live today. This approach allows children to simultaneously grow in their understanding and appreciation of their own faith.

The classes are small and a strong nurturing ethos prevails. Our focus on core values is an intrinsic part of Kyalami Preparatory School. We believe in praising and promoting the positive aspects of every child in order to develop self-esteem and build confidence. Pride in belonging creates cohesion and a sense of family that reflects the school’s community origins.

CURRICULUM

We offer a broad range of academic and cultural subjects. Children are encouraged to develop to their maximum individual potential, characterised by self-confidence and independent thinking, inspired by a commitment to academic achievement. Our Junior Preparatory pupils have an integrated day whereby a sport or cultural activity is included in their daily timetable. Our Senior

Preparatory pupils have a cultural period every week where they are exposed to activities such as debating, Internet skills as well as aspects of other cultures. Members of staff promote appropriate teaching and learning opportunities whilst endeavouring to teach creativity.

We believe that learning is an adventure and it must come alive for the children. They are taught to be resourceful and to seek alternative methods to problem solving in order to arrive at informed opinions. In the Senior Preparatory phase we offer Mathematics and English in smaller groups of approximately fourteen children. This ensures an interactive classroom and provides a perfect opportunity to extend the pupils.

Educational support is offered at the school by our Child Support Centre, which enables therapists to liaise closely with the teachers. This team of professionals includes an educational psychologist, occupational therapist, speech and hearing therapist and a remedial therapist.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR PROGRAMME

A healthy, balanced variety of sporting and cultural activities is offered at no additional cost. Every child is encouraged to participate in at least two extramural activities per term, one of which should be sporting by nature. We offer athletics, tennis, swimming, cricket, soccer, netball, softball, cross-country, chess, drama, debating, art club, enviro club and choir.

We also have children who play musical instruments in our Family of Schools orchestra. Since the opening of our Music and Drama Wing in March 2004 we have seen much growth in the area of ensemble work, individual instrumental tuition as well as the establishment of a Junior choir to feed our Senior choir. Extra cost activities include horseriding, judo, karate, ballet, golf, modern dancing etc. These varied options allow children to develop their own interests and talents.
