A SMALL SCHOOL IS SPECIAL; A SMALL BOY IS DIFFERENT
Over the 80 years of its existence in Pretoria, Waterkloof House Preparatory School (WHPS) has recognised that small boys are very different. They learn differently. They think differently. They are noisy, exuberant and spirited, yet emotionally fragile and socially vulnerable.
WHPS has grown in size and reputation into a leading independent South African preparatory School for boys, largely as a result of the recognition the headmaster and staff have given to the unique way that boys develop. WHPS focuses on the physical, psychological and spiritual needs of young boys in every area of their lives – in fact we are ‘boy specialists’.
WORLD-CLASS PREPARATORY EDUCATION
WHPS is a small School comprising 355 pupils with small classes, an open honest approach, a refreshing atmosphere and an understanding that every member of the School family is important. The School vision recognises the need to continue to offer a world-class preparatory education – nothing less.
WHPS concentrates on the kind of education that can make a difference in a boy’s life, from basic motor mechanics on the one hand to an unmatched music programme on the other. The strength of the curriculum lies in its breadth, and while our core academic strengths remain literacy, numeracy and information technology, a broad, balanced programme produces happy, well prepared boys, confident to take the next step in a fast, ever-changing technological world.
A HOLISTIC PROGRAMME
Our challenging academic curriculum is complemented by a sports programme that offers cricket, soccer, rugby, hockey, tennis, squash, athletics and swimming in which every boy participates. Our music department is a dynamic melodic part of the school comprising a jazz band, a rock band, a junior and senior orchestra and choir, and a marimba band.
Approximately two thirds of the boys take individual music instruments. Drama, art, design and technology, computer studies, North Sotho, French, environmental and leadership camps and a wide selection of clubs, ranging from chess to birdwatching, are all part of our vibrant School. The days are long but the benefits derived from the busy schedule are immense.
SMALL BUT COMPETITIVE
WHPS is a family School, small enough to be intimate but with enough depth to offer keen competition in every sphere. The School’s staff, Parent Body and Old Boys are poised to carry the School to greater heights. The fact that the School probably has one of the most active Old Boys’ Associations in South Africa, bears testimony to the fact that past pupils have a great deal of affection for their old School. This legacy continues.
Waterkloof House Preparatory School is an independent South African Preparatory School for boys, offering education from Grade 0 to Grade 7 through the medium of English (boarding from Grade 0). Boys of all races, nationalities and religions are admitted to WHPS on merit.
Parents, Staff, Old Boys and the wider WHPS family, through their enthusiastic and caring attitude combine to uphold and promote the School’s established traditions and the achievement of its vision.
