School Type: Special Needs

The Key School for Specialised Education specialises in the Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) as well as a range of special needs (PDD NOS).

Before being accepted at our school, children are assessed extensively for two weeks by a team of therapists and specialist teachers. If we believe that a child is suitable for our school, he or she will be placed in a class that best meets his or her needs. An individualised development program (IDP) is then implemented.

The areas that we are focused on specifically are:

  • Socialisation
  • Communication (AAC and PECs)
  • Opportunities to develop imagination
  • Life skills
  • Functional academics
  • Speech therapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • Play Therapy
  • Music therapy
  • Computer skills
  • Aftercare

Regular evaluation of the individualised programs take place and adjustments are made after consultation with the parents. The individualised programs include regular intervention by the therapists and psychologist.

The involvement of the parents is crucial to the development of our children and we expect parents to be involved at every level of their child’s education and progress.

The school has a dedicated and highly qualified professional staff and the children are given intervention that will change their lives. The school environment offers security and structure – qualities that our children require to develop and grow as individuals.

We call on the services of other professionals such as doctors or paediatricians if they are needed. Staff regularly attend conferences and workshops to keep up with the latest research and many of them are continually studying to better themselves professionally.
