SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT AND FACILITIES

Fleming Pre-primary is situated in Craighall Park, in Johannesburg’s northern suburbs. Five classrooms cater for pupils aged 3 to 6 years old. The leafy, spacious garden contains age-appropriate, large outdoor climbing apparatus which aim to develop pupils’ physical skills. A heated swimming pool provides for group and individual classes in Summer.

The school has a small computer centre in which pupils, in groups of eight, are introduced to technology in an enjoyable, relaxed way according to a graded curriculum.

EDUCATIONAL AIMS

A confident child with good self-esteem will be able to cope with life’s many challenges! We believe in providing a stimulating, happy environment where our pupils are motivated and enthusiastic about wanting to learn, to reason, to think and to create. Learning must be fun!

We encourage our pupils to involve themselves in all aspects of our programme and to discover and learn at their own pace. Our aim is the development of the total child – physical, emotional, social and cognitive. The smaller, co-educational environment of the pre-primary school is an ideal stepping-stone to the large, formal school environment.

OUR PROGRAMME

Our teachers are professionally qualified to teach pre-primary children and dedicated to developing the potential of each pupil. Our curriculum combines what we consider to be the most successful elements of a variety of different early learning philosophies.

Our daily programme consists of a combination of structured and free play activities. We do not believe that the learning environment should be too formal or that pressure should be put on pre-schoolers to meet the demands of age inappropriate tasks. The younger groups’ routine include a variety of informal activities, while the sixyear- olds in the Reception Class have a more structured programme aimed at developing the skills necessary for coping confidently with formal education.

Our integrated programme is theme related and follows an outcomes-based (OBE) philosophy. It takes into account the development of the following: language and literacy; numeracy; life skills; natural science; design and technology; creative art; music, movement and drama; physical education (which includes swimming in summer and games skills) general knowledge and strong perceptual skills.

Much emphasis is placed on practical hands-on learning. A wide variety of quality perceptual equipment is available to our pupils to develop concepts and skills important in preparing them for areas such as literacy and maths.

In the classroom, the teacher plays an important role in encouraging participation and directing activities. Her role is also to develop social skills such as cooperation, communication, independence, initiative, responsibility and perseverance in completing tasks.

AFTER-CARE CENTRE

Due to the large numbers of working mothers, after school care has become a vital necessity. We provide a safe, caring and happy environment to give these moms peace of mind. The staff organises relaxed activities and games to occupy the children during the afternoon. Holiday care is available

EXTRA-MURALS

Specialist teachers offer additional afterschool tuition in playball, ballet, swimming, music, karate and art.

CONCLUSION

Fleming Pre-primary aims at quality preschool education. Through an enriched programme and a stimulating, caring environment, we believe our pupils are given a strong educational foundation to enter the world of formal learning with confidence.
