School Type: Girls

St John’s Diocesan School for Girls is conveniently situated in the heart of Scottsville, within the garden city of Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal. Founded in 1897 by the Society of Sisters of St John the Divine, we are proud of the value system of love and discipline, based on Christian principles which forms the cornerstone of our school.

Our St John’s family consists of 450 girls from Grade 0 to Matric and we offer weekly and full time boarding within three beautiful boarding houses. Although traditionally an Anglican school, we welcome pupils of all denominations and religions and respect the variety of languages and cultures which are represented throughout our school.

Excellent matriculation results prove our ability to provide the tuition and encouragement by dedicated and caring staff, for all girls to achieve their full potential. Varied and flexible subject packages cover the humanities and sciences to meet the abilities and interests of all learners.

As a leading independent girls’ school, we offer the IEB Matric which is internationally benchmarked and many candidates are directly accepted into overseas universities. Participation in the extra-mural programme is an integral part of the school ethos – we encourage teamwork and provide a myriad of sporting activities and top facilities which include an indoor sports centre, manicured sports fields, tennis courts and swimming pools.

Cultural activities are encouraged and St John’s girls become involved in a wide range of activities. Art and Drama are offered as Matric subjects and Music tuition is available too. As well as catering for specific interests, a strong social concern for others is developed through various organisations and clubs. Regular academic, sporting and social contact with other schools is organised on an ongoing basis.

Our Mission Statement confirms that we are striving to be a world class centre of academic excellence providing a balanced environment in which pupils can develop academically, spiritually, culturally and physically.
