Since 1941, St David's Marist Inanda, has been a place of both teaching and learning; a place where children receive the benefits of an education at a school whose strength and history afford every child the opportunity to achieve his full potential, to find both roots and wings.
ONE SCHOOL
St David’s is one of a world-wide organisation of Marist Colleges, founded on the legacy of faith left by a young French priest, Saint Marcellin Champagnat, who established schools in early 19th Century France.
The College has undergone dynamic change since its inception, a process which has accelerated in recent years. In the new Grade O Centre, the boys are given a sound pre-school programme focusing on cognitive development in readiness for the formal learning which follows in Grade 1.
In the Preparatory School the curriculum is carefully structured to incorporate the best features of Outcomes Based Education as well as the reinforcement of key skills and essential foundation knowledge for learning and development. The vast majority of the boys from the Prep move up into the High School.
In addition, the High School benefits from the admission of boys from other primary schools into Grade 8. These boys enrich the school by bringing in different ideas, experiences and ways of looking at things. The High School has expanded rapidly in recent years, with an enrolment of 485 in 2004.
The College sits the IEB Examinations and continues to maintain a University Exemption rate of over 85% (95% in 2003). Over the years many pupils have excelled, achieving multiple distinctions. In 2001, Shen Tian achieved 8 distinctions, and we continue to have pupils placed in the top 50 countrywide.
Our academic programme, however, aims not only at the teaching of a syllabus. There is a high level of participation in the various Olympiads. Over the past four years, St David's pupils have been placed first in the Old Mutual Maths Olympiad and the Computer Science Olympiad.
"THE MARIST FAMILY" – A CARING,SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT
Being a St David's boy, however, entails far more than reaching one's potential academically. Guided by the educational mission and moral teaching of the Catholic Church, we strive to create a community of care and concern, by befriending and showing confidence in our boys while maintaining high expectations of their behaviour and conduct.
The House System of pastoral care, and small classes, enables the pupils and teachers to build harmonious relationships based on mutual trust and respect. In the High School, a key element of the pupils' leadership development is their role as mentors for junior pupils. At St David's respect must be earned and not demanded.
Our excursions, outings and leadership camps are designed not only to extend our students both in and out of the classroom but also to reinforce the key values of a St David's boy: humility, modesty and simplicity.
Our Outreach programmes are designed to instill in our boys a broader social responsibility. SMILE involves Grade 10 and 11 pupils presenting an English Oral Skills programme to disadvantaged primary school children on a weekly basis. The CO-WORKERS raise funds for the needy but, more importantly, they interact directly with those they are helping, visiting various homes in Alexandra and shelters like Nazareth House.
RELIGIOUS ETHOS
St. David's has a chapel and a resident Chaplain to counsel and advise pupils, parents and teachers. Great importance is placed on fostering a family spirit with family Masses held regularly during the year.
CULTURAL LIFE AT ST DAVID'S
Cultural participation at St David's is an integral part of the holistic education of our learners. Boys are encouraged to explore their talents and to foster new skills.
SPORT
St. David's has a proud sporting tradition. A wide variety of sport is offered. The emphasis is on maximum participation and healthy competitiveness. Sport is compulsory in both the Junior and Senior schools. The Junior school participates in swimming, cricket, tennis, soccer, athletics and cross country. In the Senior school the sporting activities are rugby, hockey, cricket, swimming, waterpolo, tennis, athletics and cross-country.
The College participates in the Independent Schools' rugby, cricket and hockey festivals. International Cricket and Rugby tours are regularly undertaken. Recently a rugby tour to South America and a cricket tour to Australia were undertaken.
At St David's we strive to instill in our pupils the values of self-discipline, self-fulfillment and independence, so that each St David's boy will live up to our motto:
