St Mary’s DSG was founded in 1879 by the first Anglican Bishop of Pretoria in order to teach his six daughters. The 125 years since its inception - and the running of the school for 75 of these years by the CSMV order of nuns - has allowed the St Mary’s DSG to establish a deep sense of tradition and core of values which is a trademark envied by many schools.
Today, 850 girls from Grades 0 to 12 attend classes in a technologically-advanced and stimulating environment. Highly-qualified teaching staff cater for the needs of each individual, while pursuing the academic, spiritual, moral, cultural and physical development of every girl.
A wide range of academic subjects is offered. The curriculum is further extended to enhance personal growth, interpersonal relationships, healthy and responsible lifestyles, decision-making and problem-solving competencies, and leadership skills. A strong work ethic exists amongst the girls and their efforts are rewarded in excellent matriculation results.
St Mary’s DSG regularly has girls placed in the “Outstanding” category of the IEB NSC results, and has a 100% pass rate for the last 21 years. This year (2010), pupils obtained a 96% “Degree” pass in the IEB NSC. Girls regularly gain places in the first university of their choice, often overseas. There is strong academic support to enable girls to achieve their potential. Our laptop programme operates from Grades 8 – 12, and is an integral and essential part of a girl’s academic career.
Our Pastoral Team of Chaplain, Educational Psychologist, Careers Specialist, Tutors and Grade heads provides professional and relevant career, spiritual, academic and spiritual guidance to pupils and parents.
The Sport department provides for the development of the skills and capabilities required for competitive and recreational activities. Main sports on offer are: swimming, basketball, netball, hockey, squash, and tennis. A short athletics season takes place in the 3rd Term. The equestrian team allows those who ride to represent the team, and the school also has biathle and adventure racing participants. Every pupil is expected to participate in sport.
Outstanding choirs, a chamber orchestra, and other ensembles allow our musical talent to flourish is excellent facilities. A wide range of Clubs and Societies are an addition to an already full curriculum.
The Boarding House of 170 pupils is a selling point of the school with a “home from home” atmosphere being created for pupils based locally and from many countries in Africa and abroad.
The school has an exceptionally strong Outreach arm, and the pupils are regularly exposed to the needs of society and respond with huge compassion to these challenges. Every girl in Grade 8 and 9 is expected to perform Community Service, and our Grade 10 Debutante is firmly established as a DSG tradition.
We strive to develop girls with confident compassion, aware of tradition yet technologically advanced, set on a path of leadership and life-long learning, to make the world a better place.
