School Type: Girls

Forming part of the oldest family of Independent schools in the Eastern Cape, the Diocesan School for Girls is situated adjacent to St Andrew’s College and Rhodes University in the leafy suburbs of Westhill, Grahamstown.

PREMIER BOARDING SCHOOL

DSG has attracted pupils from throughout Africa as well as Europe and is known as one of the top fulltime boarding schools for girls in South Africa enjoying a unique co-instructional education model with St Andrew’s College. DSG with St Andrew’s College is one of only four schools in South Africa able to offer a Rhodes scholarship to Oxford University for one of its ex-pupils every year.

CUTTING EDGE FACILITIES

The well-known David Wynne Music School is situated on the DSG campus and is shared with St Andrew’s College. It is here that music pupils are taught any musical instrument and are able to participate in a variety of musical opportunities from the wind orchestra to the Pipe Band.

The girls at DSG also have use of the much admired Arthur Cotton Design and Technology Centre. Work is currently underway to complete a state of the art Gymnasium, Drama and Dance facility adjacent to the sporting fields of the school.

The Information Technology facilities are also state of the art and recently over 70 of the latest configured computers were installed in computer labs throughout DSG and St Andrew’s College.

STRONG SUPPORT SYSTEM

In addition to a live in house Tutors and House Mistresses, the girls have access to counselling with the resident Chaplain and the academic progress of every girl is monitored on a regular basis within small tutor groups.

ALL ROUND EDUCATION

While DSG is proud of its outstanding academic results and musical opportunities. The school also provides for the girls spiritual growth with popular and regular Chapel services conducted by the resident Chaplain. Sport also forms a major part in the lives of the pupils many of whom reach provincial level and even national level. Tennis, Hockey, Squash, Netball, Athletics, Triathlon, Swimming, Horse Riding and Waterpolo are just some of the sports DSG Girls excel in.

On the cultural side there are numerous clubs and societies in which the girls can participate. Regular drama productions take place throughout the year, many of which are produced together with St Andrew’s College.

DSG Girls are happy and busy and in the words of Headmaster Bruce Probyn: “DSG Girls are incapable of mediocrity”.

The close co-operation and shared opportunities with St Andrew’s College means that families from around the world who are looking for quality schooling for their daughters and sons have here the ideal family of three schools (St Andrew’s College, St Andrew’s Prep and the Diocesan School for Girls) where all the educational needs of the pupils are met in a stimulating yet safe environment.
